Merkel reaches Paris for Council of Ministers meet

They will hold a one-on-one meeting, followed by a press conference where Trump will likely face questions about his eldest son's meeting with a Russian attorney.

The following day, Trump will take pride of place beside his French counterpart on the reviewing stand on the Champs-Elysees for the annual Bastille Day military parade.

Amid clamour in Washington over the Russian involvement in United States elections, President Donald Trump has departed for France.

Expect the two leaders to catch the world off-guard by showing (wary) unity, not antagonism.

Mr Trump arrived in the French capital after an overnight flight from Washington and hours before his meeting with Mr Macron to tackle potential solutions to the crisis in Syria and broader counter-terrorism strategies.

French President Emmanuel Macron is in hot water for saying that one of Africa's main problems is women having too many children. In hard-fought negotiations in Germany, Macron tried to soften USA language on climate policy. But Macron should realize-and, after last weekend, probably does-that Trump just isn't into him, or into anything else that Macron and most of the other heads of Europe represent.

As well as a huge generational gap - Trump at 71 is nearly twice Macron's age - there is scant evidence of any overlap of interests in their personal lives.

Especially as this year's parade comes with the added benefit of refocusing attention away from their current personal and political squabbles on to a time when French and American soldiers fought side by side for common values.

He was seen as snubbing President Trump again later in the summit, when he appeared to swerve away from Mr Trump's open arms, making the USA president wait while he greeted other leaders first.

"The relationship is excellent", said one member of Macron's team.

"It has a new president who I think is great, who's behind entrepreneurship, growth and jobs". "You know, Macron and the president have somewhat different views on how to achieve the end goal", Gary Cohn, director of the White House National Economic Council, recently told reporters returning from the G20.

"I think Macron has made the legacy of the Paris agreement, and its implementation, a core part of his agenda", said David Waskow, global climate director at the World Resources Institute.

It was Macron, who at 39 is modern France's youngest president, whose handshake with Trump left both men with white knuckles and clenched jaws.

A contingent of USA troops has already been rehearsing on the Champs-Elysees, where they will march alongside French soldiers on Friday.

Macron later launched a website created to attract USA climate scientists - "faced with the climatic skepticism of the new government of the United States" - to his country to continue their research.

The White House also hopes to largely dodge another contentious issue: climate change.

Some speculate that Macron may intend to sway Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord.

That tracks with expectations French diplomats set for the meeting.

Emmanuel Macron's government revised its budget plans Wednesday to front-load deeper tax cuts the French president says will drive job creation and growth.

Lachausse described the trip as "mainly a symbolic visit" and noted events planned to commemorate U.S.

He visited Mali, where thousands of French troops are bolstering local forces against an Islamist and separatist insurgency, during his first foreign tour in May and has restated France's commitment to military intervention in the Sahel region.
