India maul Pak 7-1 in Hockey World League Semi-Final

With the social media divided over India's hockey win and its cricket loss, PM Modi chose to skirt the reference to either of the two and chose the shuttler to convey his wishes.

India's stand-in captain, Harmanpreet Singh, who scored twice, said the players would use their sport to drive the message home.

Against Canada they secured a brilliant win and before that India registered another dominating performance when they hammered Scotland 4-1. "I am pleased with the result", Oltmans told India Today. "I am really happy with my goalkeepers", coach Roelant Oltmans said after the game.

After a Sunday that saw India and Pakistan exchange victories in cricket and hockey, there was delight and despair on both sides of the border.

Barring a few lapses early in their games, the Indians have been clinical so far in the tournament, controlling the proceedings in each and every match.

Shortly after Pakistan s Muhammad Umar Bhutta netted a consolation goal, India completed the scoring through Akashdeep Singh, who claimed his second of the match. Ramandeep Singh and Sardar Singh combined well to charge into the rival circle. India immediately responded by earning the first of their four penalty corners at the other end, only to see the first wave of defenders block Harmanpreet's flick. India also drew a crucial match against them at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

When it comes to qualification for the Odisha Hockey Men's World Cup Bhubaneswar 2018, there are five automatic berths available here in London, although this will increase depending on the outcomes of the upcoming Continental Championships, which are also World Cup qualification events.

"Never in the wildest imagination could one think that we'll concede six goals to Canada. So we can not compare the results from the past", Oltmans insisted. The way we started it looks like a good game because we got 2-3 chances.

The Netherlands, who are taking on Canada later in the day, will nonetheless start favourites. This match is very crucial for us as it is the last match in the pool stage. With less than two minutes left, Akashdeep from a hard angle at the right side of the circle thundered the far net with a superb hit.

India will next play The Netherlands on Tuesday, while Pakistan will face Scotland tomorrow.
