Trump willing to engage North Korea: Seoul

Posted May 21, 2017

Trump told South Korea's presidential envoy of his administration's willingness to try to deal with North Korea through engagement, Reuters reported.

No doubt, considering the threatening nature of North Korea, which is certainly rising day by day, it is more important for the US and South Korea to improve their ties as quick as possible.

Adm. Harry Harris Jr. made the remarks at a lecture for a Tokyo think-tank after meeting with Japanese leaders that he said focused on North Korea's missile and nuclear programs.

As North Korean missile capabilities grow, THAAD needs to be augmented with more robust missile defense systems, including the ship-borne Aegis system, the Aegis Ashore system now being deployed in Romania, expanded interceptor capabilities in Alaska and the corresponding sensors necessary to maximize the effectiveness of all these systems.

Defense experts say that North Korea's Taepodong missile resembles Iran's Shahab missile. Speaking in Japan, Commander of the U.S. Pacific Command Harry Harris not only maintained that the trilateral alliance between the United States, South Korea, and Japan must remain strong but that the world, but most notably China and Russian Federation, needed to work together to "bring Kim Jong-Un to his senses". We don't have it done yet.

"Absolutely, sanctions (are) something that we are looking at and we are going to continue to see where that takes us".

The DFA said the Philippines has expressed "very grave concern" over the DPRK's latest missile launch. What they're doing is exactly right.

Kim witnessed the test and "hugged officials in the field of rocket research, saying that they worked hard to achieve a great thing", according to KCNA.

But the Kim regime is showing no signs of ending its military provocations, firing a new type of ballistic missile on Sunday. The state news agency also said Sunday's launch tested the nation's ability to carry a "large size" nuclear warhead. An IRBM has a range up to 3,000 to 4,000 kilometers (1,860 to 2,485 miles).

First to be targeted by US cruise missiles would likely be nuclear test sites, uranium enrichment facilities and tunnels hiding mobile missile launchers. According to several reports, North Korea's latest missile test was a success, and it is rumoured that future tests could include a nuclear payload. The statement follows Pyongyang's new missile test, which has been strongly condemned by the UN.

In an opinion piece for Asia Times, Bradley Martin, a veteran North Korea watcher, urged readers not to panic about Pyongyang. "We don't have it done yet", Haley said. The North defends its weapons programmes as necessary to counter USA hostility and regularly threatens to destroy the United States.

Interestingly, the launch happened when delegations from the United States, South Korea and North Korea were in China for a "new" silk road which is believed to gift China with an image of a global leader. "Right now, it sure looks successful", said one of the U.S. defense officials.

CD REV's Wang Zixin told The Associated Press that the group hopes to rally Chinese worldwide against the deployment of THAAD and demonstrate China's "tough stance" on the issue.

However, some say President Moon may revert back to a Sunshine Policy, as was the case under former presidents Kim Dae-jung and Roh Moo-hyun.

No draft resolution was circulated to the full council, but Haley said the United States was working with China on a text.
